Don't do the same old sparkler photography exit like everyone else!

Updated: Apr 28, 2023

Being in the wedding industry for 5 years now, I've seen couples do the sparkler exit about 1,000 times. And... it gets a little... shall we say... cliche`? Don't get me wrong, I love a beautiful exit, and it makes for great photos! BUT there are other ways to do it that will make your day feel unique and help your guests feel like they haven't just happened upon the groundhog day of weddings. Plus, if you haven't paid for your photographer to be at the wedding the entire time, doing the exit earlier in the day is better.

Here are some unique types of exit/entrance photo moments:

  • Flower petals.

  • Birdseed. -- This one is good for the environment!

  • Confetti. -- Only if you're indoors because birds will eat this and get sick. You can use colorful confetti, or you can do something unique like cut up sheet music or a book of love poems.

  • Champagne -- This one could be fun if you bought a few cheap bottles of champagne and had your guests open them as you and your spouse run by! I recommend doing this only if you're okay with messing up your dress, and if it's for a departure when there is still sunlight.

  • Sparklers -- Of course, had to throw that one in there! If you're going to do this, I recommend doing it when there is some sunlight still left. Also, buy the big sparklers and two for each guest! The small ones go out in 20 seconds.

  • Run through a fountain or jump in a pool or the ocean nearby. -- With or without your guests!

  • Glow sticks! -- Only do this one at twilight.

  • Flower garlands. -- Your guests could line up and wave these around while you and your spouse run through, or you could even all dance together with your guests with these! You'll feel like a real flower child.

  • Paper airplanes.

  • Dance in the rain. -- If you're blessed with rain on your day, don't be afraid to get wet out there and dance in it together! Do this when there is still sunlight.

  • Ribbon wands.

  • Bubbles! -- I love this one because it's easy cleanup when the bubbles just disappear.

  • Beach balls. -- Perfect for a beach wedding!

  • Streamer bombs!

Here are some unique times throughout the wedding day to do them:

  • While walking down the aisle at the start of the ceremony.

  • When the couple exits the ceremony.

  • When the couple enters the reception.

  • While the couple has their first dance.

  • When the dance floor officially opens up. (If it's an outdoor reception, even better!)

  • At sunset outside.
