WLW Sapphic Engagement Session in the Heart of Downtown Atlanta

There’s something incredibly romantic about an engagement session that feels less like a photoshoot and more like stepping into a couple’s world for an afternoon.

For Mya and P’s WLW engagement session in Downtown Atlanta, we traded the traditional park or city-street setting for an intimate space high above the city. Surrounded by exposed brick, vintage artwork, overflowing bookshelves, lush greenery, and warm afternoon light, their session felt effortlessly personal—a little editorial, a little nostalgic, and completely their own.

An Intimate Downtown Atlanta Engagement Session at a Rented Studio

One of our favorite things about photographing engagement sessions is creating images that actually feel like the people in them. Mya and P’s session was filled with a mixture of quiet portraits, playful moments, and genuine affection.

Rather than relying on overly posed photographs, we approached their session with the same documentary-inspired photography that defines our work at Papillon Visuals. We gave them space to interact naturally—sitting together on the couch, holding hands, laughing, leaning into one another—and stepped in with direction when it helped create a stronger composition.

The result is a gallery that feels simultaneously editorial and lived-in.

And that Downtown Atlanta light certainly didn't hurt.

Huge windows flooded the space with late-afternoon sunshine, creating dramatic pockets of light and shadow throughout the loft. Some moments became warm, almost cinematic color photographs, while others practically begged to be photographed in black and white.

Engagement Photos That Feel Like You (As a Couple!)

Your engagement session doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

In fact, we think the best engagement photographs happen when couples choose a setting, wardrobe, and atmosphere that genuinely reflects them. For Mya and P, rich neutral tones worked beautifully against the apartment’s brick, dark wood, greenery, vintage furniture, and collected artwork.

The location also gave us room to create two very different kinds of photographs within the same session: intimate close-ups that focused almost entirely on their connection and wider environmental portraits that incorporated the architecture and character of Downtown Atlanta.

That variety is one of the reasons we love photographing couples in unique Atlanta interiors. Your surroundings become part of the story without ever becoming more important than the two of you.
