Located on Emory University’s campus, the Michael C. Carlos Museum provided a completely different backdrop from the locations we typically photograph around Atlanta. Instead of relying on sweeping outdoor scenery, we were able to use the museum’s galleries, architecture, artifacts, doorways, reflections, and pockets of light to create photographs that feel almost like stills from a film.

A Summer Engagement Session in Atlanta—Without the Summer Heat

One of the best parts about choosing an indoor location for a summer engagement session in Atlanta is getting a break from the Georgia heat.

Summer in Atlanta can be gorgeous, but anyone who has spent July or August here knows that an outdoor engagement session can also mean humidity, unpredictable thunderstorms, and trying to look effortlessly romantic while it’s 90 degrees outside.

A museum engagement session offers an alternative. The Carlos Museum gave Allison and Patrick a comfortable setting where we could slow down, explore the galleries, and focus on their connection without worrying about the weather.

And when we did step outside, the softer natural light surrounding the museum gave us an entirely different look to complement the moodier photographs indoors.

Editorial Engagement Photography at the Carlos Museum

The museum naturally lends itself to a more editorial engagement photography style.

Rather than treating every photograph like a traditional posed portrait, we photographed Allison and Patrick moving through the space together—sitting beside one another in the galleries, wandering through exhibits, dancing outside, stealing kisses in hallways, and simply taking each other in.

Some of our favorite images from the session were actually photographed through displays and architectural elements within the museum. Shooting through glass, around corners, and from farther away allowed us to create photographs that feel private and observational, as though we're catching a moment between the two of them rather than interrupting it.

That approach is at the heart of how we photograph couples at Papillon Visuals. We want to give enough direction to create beautiful imagery while still leaving room for something genuine to happen.

A Mix of Digital and Film-Inspired Imagery

For Allison and Patrick's gallery, we embraced both warm color and grainy black-and-white imagery.

The warm browns, creams, wood tones, and dramatic lighting throughout the Carlos Museum worked beautifully with Allison's floral dress and Patrick's neutral wardrobe. In other images, stripping away the color entirely gave the photographs a more timeless, almost archival feeling.

The result is an engagement gallery that doesn't feel overly polished or perfect. It feels textured, romantic, a little nostalgic, and lived-in.

We especially love that juxtaposition for engagement photography: photographs that feel elevated enough to belong in an editorial while still feeling unmistakably like the people in them.
