For Maya and Ripken’s engagement session, we traded Atlanta’s more traditional outdoor engagement locations for the galleries, architecture, and art of the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University. The result felt less like a conventional engagement shoot and more like an afternoon museum date photographed as it unfolded.

Think quiet gallery corners, ancient sculptures, grainy black-and-white photographs, warm museum lighting, long coats, and just enough movement to make everything feel cinematic.

An Atlanta Love Story | Maya + Ripken's Editorial Atlanta Engagement Session

Atlanta has no shortage of beautiful engagement photo locations, but if manicured gardens and skyline views aren’t your thing, you don’t have to force your relationship into that aesthetic.

Maya and Ripken wanted something that felt sophisticated but relaxed. The Michael C. Carlos Museum gave us exactly that.

Rather than heavily posing every photograph, we let them wander through the galleries together—looking at art, holding hands, dancing between exhibits, and stopping when something caught their attention. The museum became part of the story rather than simply serving as a backdrop.

That documentary approach gave their gallery a sense of movement and intimacy while the architecture and artwork brought in the editorial feeling we wanted.

You Don't Have to Go to NYC for Chic Engagement Photos

There’s a certain engagement-photo aesthetic people immediately associate with New York: museums, black coats, beautiful architecture, grainy black-and-white images, flash, movement, and photographs that look like frames pulled from an old film.

But Atlanta can absolutely do that, too.

The Michael C. Carlos Museum is one of our favorite examples of how choosing an unexpected Atlanta engagement photo location can completely transform the feeling of a session. Its galleries are filled with ancient art and sculpture, while the darker exhibition spaces create beautiful pockets of dramatic light.

Maya’s minimalist white dress paired with a black coat and Ripken’s neutral trousers and dark overcoat complemented the museum perfectly. Their wardrobe felt elevated without becoming overly formal—and, more importantly, still felt like them.

Documentary Photography Inside an Art Museum

Some of our favorite photographs from Maya and Ripken’s engagement session happened when they seemingly forgot about the camera.

They danced in the middle of a gallery. They kissed beside ancient sculptures. They sat together beneath classical statuary. They wandered through the Egyptian collection hand-in-hand.

We photographed through doorways, around artifacts, and between exhibits, using the museum itself to create layers within the images. In several photographs, sculptures occupy the foreground while Maya and Ripken appear quietly together behind them. In others, they become silhouettes surrounded by the architecture.

The result is romantic without feeling overly polished—part editorial engagement photography, part documentary storytelling.

Mixing Color + Black-and-White Engagement Photography

We photographed Maya and Ripken’s session with a mixture of warm color and textured black-and-white imagery.

Inside the museum, the warm gallery lighting created rich gold and amber tones that gave the photographs an almost film-like quality. Black and white transformed those same spaces into something moodier and more timeless, emphasizing light, architecture, movement, and expression.

Using both allowed us to tell the same afternoon in two different visual languages: one warm and nostalgic, the other cinematic and editorial.

Stepping Outside the Carlos Museum

We finished the session outside, where the architecture surrounding the museum gave us another completely different environment without having to travel anywhere else.

Bright afternoon sunlight poured across the stone exterior, creating flare and haze around Maya and Ripken as they walked together. The angular entryway became a dramatic frame for a photograph of them leaving hand-in-hand, while the surrounding trees and architecture gave the final portraits a quiet, almost European feeling.

It’s one of the reasons we love engagement sessions that incorporate museums and architectural spaces: there’s an incredible amount of visual variety within a relatively small area.
